At 0909 hours on the 9th of the 9th for 99 seconds approximately 50 volunteers coordinated by Esperance Local Drug Action Group, congregated at a local shopping centre to 'pause for a cause'. In Australia's first 'flash mob' to raise awareness of FASD, volunteers with inflated balloons under their shirts held a pose to draw attention to what is believed to be the leading cause of preventable non-genetic birth defects and intellectual disability. Community Education & Training Workshops
NOFASARD is is a Commonwealth charity and the peak community organisation for FASD in Australia. Community education sessions aim to inform and raise awareness of FASD and the implications for individuals, carers and families. FASD training workshops are developed with a community development approach aimed at building skill capacity and strategies to enable appropriate responses to local need. Training workshops may be tailored to interested professionals and/or community groups. All programs are evidence based. NOFASARD is a not for profit organisation and costs will be kept to a minimum.
Russell Family Fetal Alcohol Disorders Association (RFFADA)
FASD Training is conducted in partnership with an Australia-wide Registered Training Organisation, Enterprise Management Group trading as Training Connections Australia (TCA). The training developed by the rffada and delivered by TCA was the first publicly available training delivered in Australia by professional and qualified trainers. Training can be customised and contextualised to the needs of the organisation or group and can be incorporated into the policies and procedures of the organisation to maximise return on investment.

Focus on FASD in WA Forum
On behalf of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research and the Government of Western Australia Drug and Alcohol Office thank you to everyone who attended the Focus on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in WA Forum on Monday 26 February 2012.
With 155 people registered to attend we were overwhelmed by the interest in the forum and the positive feedback we received. Participants were from government departments - corrective services, child protection, education and health; maternity groups and support services; universities; research institutes; Aboriginal health organisations; foster carers and support organisations; community groups; private practitioners; and consumers and community members.

Introduction of a Bill into the Australian Parliament
A Bill was introduced into the Australian Parliament on 22 June 2011 for an Act to amend the law relating to social security and family assistance, and for other purposes. Social Security and Other Legislation Amendment (Miscellaneous Measures) Bill 2011. The move to introduce the Bill called for the Parliament to continue to facilitate and support the development of a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) national diagnostic tool for the use of medical professionals and other health service providers, to give FASD the status of a recognised disability in Australia, and institute a national awareness campaign, among other calls. FASD is currently not recognised as a disability by the Australian Government.

Interagency Coordinating Committee on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (ICCFASD)
The ICCFASD announced the release of a consensus statement, Recognizing Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND) in Primary Health Care of Children. These recommendations are the result of a consensus development style conference which took place in November 2011, sponsored by the ICCFASD, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
